'De landloper en het gerecht', in: K. Jansma en M. Schroor, Tweeduizend jaar geschiedenis van Gelderland, Leeuwarden 1986, p.229-233 This contribution to a book on the history of the Dutch eastern province of Guelders describes the prosecution of vagabonds in this region, based on criminal records and jurisdiction in the period 1545-1798. It sets out to describe the overall social and economic situation, continues with a sketch of the different sort of people who felt driven to vagrancy, tells about the refusal of the settled country population to cooperate with the bailiffs, and ends with drawing a picture of the changing penalties to which the majority of the vagabonds was convicted.
